Diffraction-free and dispersion-free pulsed beam propagation in dispersive media.
The diffraction of pulsed beams of light is formulated as an anomalously dispersive phenomenon. In a dispersive material, the effects of material group-velocity dispersion and diffraction on pulsed beam propagation can mutually cancel if the transverse profile of the pulse is suitably chosen.
متن کاملPulsed-beam propagation in lossless dispersive media. I. Theory
This first part of a two-part investigation is concerned with the effects of dispersion on the propagation characteristics of the scalar field associated with a highly localized pulsed-beam (PB) wave packet in a lossless homogeneous medium described by the generic wave-number profile k(v) 5 v/c(v), where c(v) is the frequency-dependent wave propagation speed. While comprehensive studies have be...
متن کاملFree-Space Ultrashort Pulsed Beam Propagation Beyond the Paraxial Approximation
Applying the temporal and spatial Fourier transform method, we obtain a nonparaxial pulsed beam solution, which is based on the paraxial pulsed beam solution, where the nonparaxiality is evaluated by using a series of expansions. Specifically, the general lowest-order correction field is given in an integral form. Some special examples, such as the lowest-order correction to the paraxial approx...
متن کاملFar-field diffraction of pulsed optical beams in dispersive media
Ž . Propagation of a pulsed optical beam a train of ultrashort optical pulses inside a linear dispersive medium is studied in the far field without making the paraxial approximation. This approach permits us to obtain analytical results that are valid for relatively large diffraction angles. Pulse characteristics are found to be affected considerably by the combination of diffraction and disper...
متن کاملAsymptotic description of pulsed ultrawideband electromagnetic beam field propagation in dispersive, attenuative media.
The asymptotic description of the coupled spatial and temporal evolution of a pulsed ultrawideband electromagnetic beam field as it propagates through a dispersive, attenuative material that occupies the half-space z > or = z(0) is obtained from the angular spectrum of plane waves representation. This angular-spectrum representation expresses the wave field as a superposition of both homogeneou...
